Why Visit Lake Manyara National Park?
Lake Manyara offers a safari experience that is very different from Tanzania’s vast open-grassland destinations.

The western edge is dominated by the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment, creating an impressive backdrop for wildlife viewing and photography.

Lake Manyara Tree-Climbing Lions
The tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara are among the park’s most famous attractions.
Unlike the classic image of lions resting on open ground, lions in the Manyara ecosystem are sometimes observed relaxing on the branches of trees. From these elevated positions, they can escape ground-level heat, insects and other disturbances while surveying their surroundings.
Seeing a lion resting in an acacia tree creates one of the most memorable photographic opportunities on a northern Tanzania safari.
However, wildlife is unpredictable. Tree-climbing lions are a celebrated feature of the park, but sightings can never be guaranteed.
We offer flexible Tanzania safari packages designed for different travel styles and budgets.

Responsible Tourism at Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara’s forests, wetlands and wildlife require careful protection.
Visitors should:
Responsible safari practices help protect the fragile ecosystems that make Lake Manyara special.
For many travelers, one full day is enough to experience the principal attractions of Lake Manyara.
A one-day visit can include:
Morning: Enter the park and explore the groundwater forest and wildlife areas.
Midday: Continue toward the lake, wetlands and open woodland while searching for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys and birds.
Afternoon: Explore additional wildlife areas, look for tree-climbing lions and enjoy views of the Rift Valley before departing the park.
Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara can be visited throughout the year, but the best period depends on the type of safari experience you want.
Dry Season
The drier months generally provide good conditions for wildlife viewing because vegetation can become less dense and animals may be easier to locate around available water sources.
This period can be particularly attractive to travelers combining Manyara with other Northern Circuit destinations.
Wet Season
The green season transforms the park with lush vegetation and fresh landscapes.
This period can be especially rewarding for:
Flamingo numbers and waterbird concentrations can vary according to seasonal ecological conditions, so travelers interested specifically in birdlife should plan with current conditions in mind.
Our recommendation: Rather than choosing a month based only on wildlife, build your Lake Manyara visit around your complete Tanzania safari route, accommodation preferences and other destinations such as Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Lake Manyara is particularly valuable because of its combination of forest, lake, wetlands, woodland and Rift Valley scenery.

| Tarangire | Large elephant populations, baobabs and seasonal wildlife concentrations |
