The History of Rhinos in Uganda
Uganda was once home to both the Eastern Black Rhino and the Northern White Rhino. These magnificent animals roamed various regions of the country, including Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
Unfortunately, widespread poaching and political instability during the 1970s and early 1980s led to the complete disappearance of rhinos from Uganda. By 1982, the country’s rhino population had become extinct.
Recognizing the need to restore this iconic species, Rhino Fund Uganda partnered with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to establish a breeding and conservation program. This initiative resulted in the creation of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in 2005.
The sanctuary began with six Southern White Rhinos imported from Kenya and the United States. Through intensive protection and successful breeding programs, the rhino population has steadily increased over the years.
